I am with you every step of the way...going way beyond just giving you a customized sleep plan (though it will include one). Because there isn’t a one-size-fits-all when it comes to sleep, my sleep coaching is specific to your child, the needs of your family and teaches you long-term parenting skills for sleep. And I operate with biological and science-based education for good sleep in babies and children, pulling from experience as a Postpartum Doula, a parenting educator, and providing sleep coaching for hundreds of parents in the last 10+ years. And as a Certified Lactation Educator with years of experience helping mothers, I’m knowledgeable in providing sleep coaching to parents of a nursing child, as equally as parents who bottle nurse.
There are parents that want sleep solutions without using traditional CIO. And from speaking to parents over the years, I know that many believe they can't have good sleep for themselves or their child because they breastfeed, co-sleep or bed-share. When in fact, you can. Whether your child is sleeping in their own room, in a crib, in your bed or next to your bed, working with you and your family dynamics, we will find holistic sleep solutions that will result in more sleep for you and your child. Is this Crying-It-Out?
Crying-it-out (CIO) requires baby to cry at set intervals without parental or caregiver support or comfort during that time frame. I often get asked if I use CIO during sleep coaching. The basis of my sleep coaching is on the biological needs of a child and the Secure Attachment Theory. In the studies on the secure attachment theory, it has been found that children grow to be competent individuals, with a sense that they are worthy of respect and with the ability to engage well in a healthy way in interpersonal relationships with their caregivers and those around them. The concept of this theory is that secure attachment begins at birth. That the cries and the communications of a child have a meaning and that by supporting children through these emotions, they develop a healthy and secure attachment to their primary caregiver that later has an affect in how they interact in relationships with those around them. At a recent discussion at Granola Babies with Help Me Grow of Orange County, a non-profit organization that specializes in child development education and connect parents to local resources, the concept of insecure attachment that a child learns through crying-it-out, where their cries are not being supported by their main caregiver, can result in that child growing up to later have co-dependent, unhealthy relationships with others. For this and other reason, we do not use any method of controlled crying-it-out in sleep coaching.
There are parents that want sleep solutions without using traditional CIO. They understand that even if their child cries during the process, that unlike CIO, the parent will be present and supportive through any negative emotions. And for these parents, it's quite hard to find effective options! I know, because I personally called many sleep coaches over the years to help find one that didn't resort to CIO as part of their sleep solution. It was nearly impossible to find! The fact is that parents can have healthy sleep for their children without doing the usual CIO. It's possible.
Does it really work?
With parents and caregivers that are committed to the time of learning and applying healthy sleep habits for their children and with my coaching and guidance through the process, sleep is significantly improved. This is not a "quick-fix" solution. We are't using CIO and hoping it works. I work with gentle sleep solutions that also teaches you healthy sleep concepts to use with your child. What we accomplish is effective throughout the parenting of your child and into adulthood. As I always tell parents, we are working as a team -- I provide the guidance and coaching each week, you, as the parents are doing the steps to implement the changes. We set up a foundation for your child that sets up the entire family for success and benefits you in parenting. It's a process that based on parent interaction, synergy and communication. And sleep goals are met throughout this emerging relationship between the parents and the sleep coach.
Is my child getting enough sleep?
Here are the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommendations that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). If your child is not getting the recommended sleep, through my Gentle Sleep Coaching, we can work to achieve healthy sleep for your child.

Through the experience of becoming a mother, I became a Childbirth Educator with The International Childbirth Education Association and Birthing from Within, a Certified Lactation Educator/Counselor with University of San Diego, a Postpartum Doula with DONA and a Certified Positive Parenting Educator with Positive Discipline. I'm also an American Heart Association Certified CPR Instructor.
